What Menopause Medication is Available?

Introduction
Hormone replacement medication is widely used to treat women who are in perimenopause as well as menopausal women. Other medications that are available to treat menopause and its symptoms include: Estrogen replacement, creams, lotions, relaxants, anti-depressants, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Although most of these medications are perfectly safe to take, it is always best to discuss any medication with your doctor. There are other varieties of medications also available. This includes herbal medications as well as over the counter medications that may be taken.

There are a number of treatments available to the woman of today and all these have their own plus and minuses. Women today appreciate the fact that herbal and natural treatments make more sense than the synthetic medicines, though it is not possible yet to do without the latter totally. Let us look at what is available today as menopause medication:

HRT:

The most common of all the treatments is the HRT. It is common because it covers the basics of menopause, like the replacement of hormone that is getting depleted by the ovaries shut down process. This method though extremely effective, has been found to be connected to cancer and blood clotting, and hence long-term usage is highly contra indicated.

ERT:

Estrogen replacement therapy is a milder menopause medication than the HRT, but more or less on the same lines. It replaces the loss of estrogen in the blood stream thus giving relief to a host of symptoms such as hot flushes, and night sweats. The same dangers that come from HRT lurks in ERT as well, so should not be used for too long a period of time.

Locally applicable creams and lotions:

It was observed that there is a lot of relief without half the risks involved when the hormones are applied locally, for example using vaginal cream for itchiness and dryness. These are mostly progesterone creams. These too have been associated with cancer and dangerous blood clots.

Treatment without hormones:

There is menopause medication, which does not contain hormones. These are usually relaxants; anti-depressants, which are SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are used to treat hot flushes in particular.

Treatment with other menopause medication with hormones:

There are a number of menopause medications that have hormones such as oral contraceptives, progestin tablets and low does estrogen patches or vaginal creams which are highly beneficial (though with risks in the long terms usage).

Each one of the above is helpful in one-way or the other. A combination of a few of them usually works well in totally keeping the symptoms under control. However, since a lot of risks are involved as well, tend to navigate towards herbal alternatives. No one is willing to take a chance on diseases such as cancer and heart attack.

It is easy though to find alternative efficient menopause medication, which is based on natural ingredients, gathered from plants and minerals.
